Penélope Cruz to play Donatella Versace for FX

In her USA television debut, Cruz will star opposite previously casted stars Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss as designer Gianni Versace and serial killer Andrew Cunana, respectively. Production for the third, "Versace", is slated to begin next month with an expected air date in 2018.

The Oscar victor is set to topline FX's Ryan Murphy anthology Versace: American Crime Story, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

It will be interesting to see Cruz's interpretation of the famed Italian fashion designer who took over her brother, Gianni Versace's, fashion empire after he was brutally murdered on the steps of his home in Miami Beach.

They included her much-loved wartime songs We'll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, backed by an acoustic guitar. It is thought that the record's release on Friday (17Mar17) makes her the oldest act in history to debut a new album.

The first series, The People V OJ Simpson, aired previous year and picked up accolades at the Golden Globes and the Emmys. The season will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth.

The second and third seasons of the show are being filmed in rather-close proximity to one another, and are both going to air (tentatively) at some point in 2018. Cruz won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2009 for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, also notably appearing in last year's Zoolander 2, 2011's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, 2001's Blow and a career breakthrough opposite Tom Cruise in 2001's Vanilla Sky.

Murphy, himself, shot down the rumors of Gaga's casting at the Television Critics Association press tour back in January. She just finished filming Murder on the Orient Express. "But I would love to work with her on something in the future". Though Pepe Cruz is a surprising, and wholly welcome, choice for Donatella, she's got some big, Gina Gershon-sized stilettoes to fill.
