JC Penney announces closure of Decorah store, 137 others

The former Martinsburg Mall - now Foxcroft Towne Center - is seen gutted out from the roadway Friday in Martinsburg.

More stores could close to save money, but for now, the site at the Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood was not on the list.

In addition to the 138 stores, J.C. Penney Company Inc. also will close one supply chain facility in Lakeland, Fla., and will relocate one supply chain facility in Buena Park, Calif.

JCPenney stores at the Wyoming Valley and Viewmont malls will not be among the 138 closed by the national retailer, according to a list released by the company Friday.

USC Basketball vs. Baylor Odds: Trojans Open as Underdogs
No. 11 USC trailed SMU by eight points at halftime and was down 10 with less than 12 minutes to go, only to mount a furious rally. Moments later, after SMU answered, USC guard Elijah Stewart sunk a trey that put the Trojans ahead 66-65 with 36 seconds left.

In a prepared statement, J.C. Penney officials said the closings are part of the company's strategy to reduce its overall size nationally. The retailer will continue to operate almost 900 stores. "Maintaining a large store base gives us a competitive advantage in the evolving retail landscape since our physical stores are a destination for personalized beauty offerings, a broad array of special sizes, affordable private brands and quality home goods and services".

Built in 1991, the Martinsburg Mall was purchased by Martinsburg Development Partners LLC in 2013. The company had about 105,000 full and part-time employees previous year.

"Obviously, we are delighted for the mall and the community", said Mall General Manager Ken Huge.

"Even with a reduced store count, JC Penney is competitively positioned to deliver a differentiated department store model that meets the expectations of a digital world with an inspiring, tangible shopping environment", Ellison stated in the release.
