The release comes a few weeks after Penney's said it would close up to 140 stores this year, but declined to identify the locations at that time. Two other J.C. Penny stores in Louisiana - in DeRidder and in Baton Rouge's Cortana Mall - are also on the list of stores to be closed.
In a statement released Friday, the J.C. Penney company said most of the affected stores will start selling of their inventory and preparing to shut down on April 17.
The Albemarle store - which has operated out of its current location since 1987 - is scheduled to close by mid-September, company officials said. The company will provide outplacement support services for eligible employees who will be leaving the chain. "Our decision to close stores will allow us to raise the overall brand standard of the Company and allocate capital more efficiently".
In January of this year, Sears Holding, the parent company of Sears and Kmart stores, announced a round of closings, but as with JCPenney, the Sears at Georgia Square escaped that fate.
J.C. Penney is far from the only department store icon to announce closures as more people opt for fast fashion retailers or cyber shopping over mall walking. It opened as the Golden Rule Store in 1902.

The Plano, Texas-based retailer said the closings will affect 5,000 employees, including 30 at the Easley store. It also has local stores at Greenwood Park Mall, the Shops at Perry Crossing in Plainfield and Hamilton Towne Center in Noblesville.
Traditional brick-and-mortar retailers like Penney's and others have been hit hard by competition from online sales.
Cortana's remaining anchor tenants are Dillard's, which has reduced its presence to a clearance store that only takes up the first level, and Virginia College. In Pennsylvania, stores in King of Prussia, Bloomsburg, Clearfield, Towanda, Philadelphia, Pennsdale and Willow Grove will close.
