Andrew Puzder withdraws from consideration as labor chief

CBS News reported earlier Wednesday that a person close to Puzder said he was "very exhausted of the abuse".

"The man I'll be announcing for labor is a star, great person", Trump said as he opened a meeting with some of his staunchest supporters in the House.

Puzder's failed nomination is the latest loss for the White House, which is stumbling through a period of turmoil following the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn earlier this week.

"Dean Acosta has served in three presidentially-appointed, senate-confirmed positions".

General Motors could exit Europe with $1 billion Opel sale to Peugeot
Any deal would include Opel's United Kingdom affiliate Vauxhall, and create a carmaker with about 16% of the European market. Peugeot Citroen owner PSA is in discussions to buy GM's European operations, Opel, which includes Vauxhall.

Alexander Acosta was nominated as President Trump's Labor Secreatry pick Thursday. He also thanked supporters "who have voiced their praise and hopeful optimism for the policies and new thinking I would have brought to America as Secretary of Labor".

The Independent notes that he would have needed 50 out of the 52 Republicans in the Senate to vote for him, but some Republicans do not stand on his side. The Campaign for Accountability's request says that because of Puzder's upcoming hearing, details regarding his marriage divorce "are of high interest and concern to the members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee", who will conduct the hearing.

Puzder, the CEO of CKE Restaurants, which owns the Hardee's and Carl's Jr. brands, is a vocal critic of President Barack Obama's labor policies and the Fight for $15. It also came to light that Puzder had hired an undocumented immigrant as a maid, which didn't endear him to Republicans. "But, if he continues to appoint mega-rich CEO's who stiff their workers of rightful pay and turn a blind eye to sexual harassment, it won't be the last".

Puzder withdrew from consideration after Politico revealed a tape of his ex-wife, Lisa Fierstein, on Oprah Winfrey's show in 1990 in which she discussed Puzder assaulting her and vowing revenge on her for going public. Puzder has denied the charges and Fierstein retracted her accounts in the months after the episode aired.
