Rallies set for Planned Parenthood defunding across Nebraska and Iowa

Thousands of demonstrators across the nation are expected to fight in favor of and against federal funding for Planned Parenthood in a series of rallies Saturday.

"These protests are created to shame the patients who seek basic healthcare services from Planned Parenthood and to intimidate the healthcare professionals who work here".

About 1,000 people, the majority sign-carrying women, turned out in front of the office and lined both sides of Cass between West Canfield and Willis to voice support for health services, including abortions, provided by Planned Parenthood.

"There are a lot of people who are pro-life who couldn't make it out today", Grandmaison said.

"The federal government has been subsidizing Planned Parenthood to the tune of more than $430 million annually", explains Eric Scheidler, national organizer of #ProtestPP.

President Donald Trump last month banned federal funding to worldwide groups that perform abortions or provide information about abortions. Pfaff and scores of other protesters gathered Saturday outside the only clinic in Missouri that provides abortions.

Since 2015, the coalition has hosted annual rallies, according to its website, and focused this year's rally on stripping Planned Parenthood of federal funding and giving it to federally qualified health centers that don't perform abortions.

"We are the pro-life generation", she said. Another stands with Planned Parenthood because, "There is no racial & economic justice without reproductive justice". But not all Republican senators are supportive. "It's about a woman's right to choose what she wants to do with her own body", says protester Linda Read. Funds could easily be diverted to FQHCs to avoid any disruption of services to current Planned Parenthood clients.

"Saturday, and every day, Planned Parenthood advocates and activists show that they refuse to be intimidated and they won't back down". "I think it's the best way to get your views across".

"The fact that it's about a woman's choice, well half of the babies in the womb are women, tiny women", she said.

On the other side, about 150 people dressed in pink clutched matching signs that said "I support Planned Parenthood".

The protests and rallies come after talks from members of Congress about defunding Planned Parenthood, as well as various measures targeting Planned Parenthood and abortions at the state level.

"I just want to emphasize that we love women".
